Can an Airtable automation email a CSV attachment? (And what to do instead)

Short answer: no. Airtable's Send email action can include a list of records in the email body, but there is no automation action that converts records into a CSV file and attaches it. Airtable's own support documentation says as much, and the question comes up in the community forum every few weeks.

What the built-in automation can do

What it can't do is build a file. The email body is fine for a quick heads-up, but the recipient can't sort it, filter it or open it in Excel, and long lists get cut off.

The usual workarounds

  1. Download CSV by hand from the view every week and email it. Free, reliable, and someone has to remember.
  2. Make or Zapier: schedule → search records → build CSV text → create file → send email. Works, but every column is mapped by hand and each run uses operations.
  3. Automation script + external email API: a script builds CSV text and posts it to an email service such as SendGrid or Mailgun as a base64 attachment. You need an account there, an API key stored in the script, and to handle pagination and escaping yourself.
  4. Script writes the CSV into an attachment field, then a second automation emails that record's attachment. This needs somewhere to host the file first, because scripts can't upload binary data straight into an attachment field.
